Though a few may winter, male Elegant Trogons generally return to the canyons of the Sky Islands in March. They immediately setup territories and select multiple potential nest sites. During this time they seem to be constantly calling.

Females return to breeding grounds a few weeks after the males. Each female selects a mate and his best nest cavity, then the pair settles down for business.
